The fall of the empire and the origin of the creeping death

In the year 2113  the aristocratic leaders of the free world had over extended their debt to foreign nations.
Unable to pay because the people were bankrupt and no more taxes could be wrung from their labor....
Unwilling to do without their many many luxuries...
Unable to conceive of a better way of life for themselves and the people who elected them to power....
They decided it was time for war.
Not just any war.
The biggest war yet.
It would be a war against all nations...no one could be free
if freedom meant that they would have to give up their power and wealth...
no one would have freedom
All the people would support the war or they would be branded as traitors to their nation.
FASCISTS
unwilling to admit it....
they began to issue commands to root out dissent.
Those who would not serve them will be destroyed....

The origin of the creeping death:
Among the common people...
Among the young the old and the poor...
there were many who predicted this turn of events....
and they went underground.
spoke their own language
were silent at town meetings and never protested the tyranny they witnessed all around them...
they began to hide from the authority of the land.
they knew that they would not be able to win a war against so mighty a force....
they knew also that they could not win an argument in the public eye...the media had long ago given over to misinformation and lies to serve the purposes of those in power....
no one but their brothers could be trusted...and their sisters too...
they knew each other at a glance...and by their many tattoos....
They did not gather often...for they knew that they would be rounded up and forced to serve....or die...
So they instead reinvented old ways...
They molded new metal and made blades that would slit a man with a touch.
they studied in secret...the lives of great sword fighters and assassins of old....
never would they fire a shot.
They became known as the creeping death.
the ever present force....
no lord would walk in the city...
no soldier would dare enter a tavern without his mates...and if he was alone...it was without a uniform...
for the creeping death waited until these men and servants were alone to take them...
Some were hunted like animals in the streets and tracked to their houses where they were cut open on their silk sheets and left to rot....
Some were hung eviscerated in public places...the rich ones mostly...there for all to see...many birds feasting on their rotten guts....blood turned black and brown from the heat of the mid day sun. Spiders and worms made homes of their severed skulls.
the smell made the weak wretch...
but to the creeping death it was as if a flower bloomed each time their blade touched the blood of these evil men.

The silent prayer of the creeping death:
may your enemy never see your blade...until it is in his eye.
